Missed lessons and classes
Regular attendance at lessons, classes, and ensembles is expected.
Lessons: Students must give the office a minimum of 24 hours notice for cancellations in order to receive a makeup lesson using the online absence form. For children/teens, no more than three lessons per school-year term and one in the summer term will be eligible for a makeup lesson. For adults, two lessons per Fall or Spring semester and one lesson per summer semester will be eligible for a makeup lesson. It is the student’s responsibility to schedule the makeup lesson. We recommend you schedule the lesson promptly as makeup lessons expire 30 days following the absence.
- Please use the Makeup Scheduler on the Student Services Tab.
- Makeup lessons must be scheduled at least two weeks in advance of the end of term (June 15th, 2018)
- Notifying the teacher does not constitute notice, please use the online absence form
- Makeup lessons are offered upon availability.
- Makeup lessons expire 30 days of the absence.
- If the student misses the scheduled makeup class, the lesson will be forfeited.
Ensembles and Classes: There are no makeups for missed classes.
In the event of a weather emergency, status information will be available on the school answering machine and email notice will be distributed.
Students receive a weekly lesson day and time. If a change is required, the office needs two weeks to process a schedule change request. Lessons missed due to late schedule change requests cannot be made up.
Students’ lessons and classes will be interrupted if accounts fall behind in payment and payments overdue for 30 days will be charged a $25 late fee.
If your account is issued a credit, the credit must be used with registration for the next adjacent semester. Credits expire without use.
Change of Instructor
SMC’s method of assigning a private instructor is designed to make the best possible match before studies begin. We will honor all change requests if possible, based on availability. However, if a change is desired, the student must contact the office in writing. Two weeks are required to process a change of instructor request.

Withdrawal and Refunds
Notice of withdrawal from private lesson instruction must be received by the office in written form or email with thirty days advance notice. Notifying the teacher does not constitute withdrawal. Tuition and registration fees are not refundable.
Given the small size of our classes, every student counts. A refund will be given to students withdrawing after the first class session minus a 25% withdrawal fee. No refunds will be given after the second class session. Please allow 3-4 weeks for processing of refunds.
Class Cancellation Policy
SMC reserves the right to cancel classes with insufficient enrollment. In the event of cancellation, a full refund will be issued.
On the rare occasion that a SMC Faculty member is unable to teach their scheduled lesson or class, a qualified substitute teacher will be provided to ensure continuity and progress.
To ensure your child’s safety, please be sure to pick him/her up promptly after class/lesson time. SpeakMusic Conservatory faculty and staff do not supervise children waiting in SpeakMusic Conservatory’s hallways before and/or after classes/lessons. Children are under supervision during their instruction time only. Neither instructors nor administrators are responsible for supervising children outside of teaching time.
As a reminder, the waiting area and hallways of SMC are a quiet space for students and families to await their lesson time. Please be considerate of other students and families. Keep cell phone conversations to a minimum and no running or shouting is tolerated.
